Mermaid Melissa, Merman Antonio, and Manatees are featured in this weeks video together!
Very few places are left in the world were you can get up close with manatees. In fact manatees are protected due to rapidly declining numbers we have seen over the last 50 years making them close to being an extinct species without our environmental efforts. Manatees are slow moving and often hit by boats or harassed by people who touch them aggressively, try to ride them, or other illegal practices. These days you must have permission to swim near marine mammals such as manatees and Melissa works closely with many animal protection services to help bring attention to these harmless marine animals who otherwise have no voice without our help.
With the hope to raise awareness and inspire others to research “manatee conservation” and help save the manatees by studying more about their history, doing school projects touching on these issues, voting to protect marine species and their aquatic homes, and other out reach efforts in order to protect these beautiful creatures who are known as gentle giants.
Folklore and documented accounts of mermaids being seen of the sides of boats have been documented throughout history. Some of these mermaid sightings were mentioned by Christoffer Columbus on his ocean exploration trips which many believe were sailors seeing manatees -the original mermaid of the sea.
